Your Guide to Tackling the UCAT

The UCAT, or University Clinical Aptitude Test, is an important admissions test for students applying to medical and dental programmes at universities in the UK and other UCAT partner universities. For students in Singapore, understanding when to take the UCAT, how to register, where to sit the test, and which universities require it can make the admissions process much easier to navigate. Whether you are just starting to explore medicine or already preparing for your application, this guide covers the key UCAT information you need to know for the 2027 test cycle.

What is the UCAT?

The UCAT is a computer-based admissions test designed to assess a range of mental abilities that universities consider important for medical and dental education.

Rather than testing your knowledge of specific school subjects, the UCAT focuses on skills such as:

  • Critical thinking
  • Problem-solving
  • Decision-making
  • Numerical reasoning
  • Understanding real-world situations

The test is used alongside other selection criteria, including academic qualifications and interviews.

For Singapore students, the UCAT can be particularly relevant if you are considering medical programmes locally or in the UK.

Do Singapore Students Need to Take the UCAT?

The answer depends on where you are applying and which qualification you are using.

Applying to LKCMedicine at NTU Singapore

If you are applying to the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the UCAT is part of the admissions process.

NTU states that applicants must take the UCAT as part of the criteria for entry to LKCMedicine. Only UCAT results taken within the 12-month period before admission are considered.

For students planning their application, this means the UCAT should be treated as an important part of the overall admissions timeline rather than something to leave until the last minute.

Applying to NUS Medicine

For NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, UCAT requirements depend on your educational qualification.

For NUS Medicine, whether you need the UCAT depends on the qualification you are presenting. Applicants presenting international qualifications generally need a supplementary qualification, such as the UCAT, while applicants presenting IB forecast results also need a supplementary qualification. Singapore-Cambridge A-Level, Singapore Polytechnic Diploma and applicants submitting actual IB results do not generally require the UCAT.

If you are unsure whether you need the UCAT, always check the latest requirements for your specific qualification and application cycle before registering for the test.

Applying to Medical Schools in the UK

The UCAT is used by a large number of UK universities as part of their selection process for medical and dental programmes. For 2027 entry, students applying to relevant UCAT Consortium universities are required to sit the UCAT 2026.

Because each university may use UCAT results differently, it is important to check the individual entry requirements of every university on your shortlist.

UCAT Test Format and Scoring

The UCAT consists of four separately timed multiple-choice subtests:

Subtest

Questions

Time

Scoring

Verbal Reasoning

44

22 minutes

300–900

Decision Making

35

37 minutes

300–900

Quantitative Reasoning

36

26 minutes

300–900

Situational Judgement

69

26 minutes

Band 1–4

The three cognitive subtests — Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning — are combined into a total score ranging from 900 to 2700.

Situational Judgement is reported separately as a Band from 1 to 4, with Band 1 representing the highest level of performance.

There is also no negative marking for incorrect answers, so candidates should avoid leaving questions unanswered when time is running out.

How Long Is the UCAT?

The standard UCAT takes 117 minutes and 30 seconds in total, including the timed instruction sections before each subtest.

Once the test has started, it cannot be paused under standard testing conditions.

This makes time management an important part of UCAT preparation. Becoming familiar with the format before test day can help you focus on answering questions efficiently rather than spending valuable time figuring out how the test works.

How to Register for the UCAT

Registering for the UCAT involves three main steps.

Step 1: Create a UCAT Account

All candidates taking the UCAT in 2027 — including students who have taken the test before — need to create a new UCAT Account.

For the 2026 test cycle, the new registration system requires returning candidates to create a new account rather than using an account from a previous year.

Step 2: Register for the Test

Once your account has been created, complete the registration process through your UCAT dashboard.

It is a good idea to complete this step early so that you are ready to book as soon as booking opens.

Step 3: Book Your Test

You can then select your preferred test date, time and location through the booking system. Candidates can only sit the UCAT once in any given year.

How Much Does the UCAT Cost?

For the 2026 test cycle:

  • UK test centres: £70
  • Test centres outside the UK: £115

Since Singapore is outside the UK, Singapore-based candidates taking the UCAT at a test centre should expect to pay the £115 international test fee.

When Should Singapore Students Take the UCAT?

There is no single “best” test date for every student.

The right timing depends on:

  • Your university application timeline
  • Your target universities
  • Your academic commitments
  • How prepared you are for the test
  • The amount of time you need to become comfortable with the UCAT format

For students applying for the 2028 university intake, the 2027 UCAT testing window starts from mid May 2027. The important thing is to plan backwards from your university application deadlines rather than simply choosing the latest available test date.

How Should You Prepare for the UCAT?

Preparing for the UCAT is different from studying for a traditional school examination.

The test is designed around reasoning, decision-making and problem-solving skills, so becoming familiar with the question types and practising under timed conditions are important parts of preparation.

Here are a few steps to get started:

  • Understand the Test Format: Familiarize yourself with the UCAT's different sections including Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, and Situational Judgement. Each section tests specific skills, and allocating appropriate study time for each is crucial.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Utilise the official UCAT question banks and practice tests available on the UCAT website. There are also numerous online resources and UCAT prep courses offered by various educational institutions.
  • Develop Time Management Skills: The UCAT is a timed test, so honing your time management skills is essential. Practice tests under timed conditions will help you develop a strategy to tackle each section effectively within the allotted timeframe.
  • Sharpen Your Critical Thinking: The UCAT heavily emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Engage in activities that challenge your analytical skills, such as logic puzzles or critical thinking games.
