The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required as evidence of English language proficiency for admission to many US and Canadian universities. It also recognised for migration purposes for Australia and New Zealand.
It is conducted most commonly as an internet-based test, and consists of four main sections, each assessing the following skills, as per ETS, the organising body of the TOEFL:

|Section II: Listening
Understand main ideas and important details, whether they are stated or implied; distinguish more important ideas from less important ones; understand how information is being used; recognize how pieces of information are connected; understand many different ways that speakers use language for purposes other than to give information; synthesize information, even when it is not presented in sequence, and make correct inferences on the basis of that information.
|Section III: Speaking|
Fluidity of expression; clarity of speech; usage of grammar and vocabulary; control of basic and complex grammatical structures; development and coherency of response; clarity of progression of ideas;
|Section IV: Writing
Effectively address a given topic and task; organisation and development of ideas; usage of appropriate explanations, exemplifications, and/or details; unity, progression, and coherence of ideas; consistent facility in the use of language, demonstrating syantactic variety, appropriate word choice, and idomaticity.
