The main difference is that TOEFL uses American English and IELTS uses British English. Universities in America require TOEFL while the other international universities require IELTS. It is always advisable to check with the university that you are considering.

In the TOEFL speaking section, you will speak to a computer whereas in an IELTS speaking test, you will speak to a person.
