Each of the four sections (English, Mathematics, Reading, Science) is scored on a scale ranging from 1 (low) to 36 (high). The Composite Score is the average of your four test scores, rounded to the nearest whole number, and also has a possible total of 36.

If you take the ACT Plus Writing test, you will receive ACT report scores with two additional scores: a Writing subscore and a Combined English/Writing score. Your essay will be scored by two readers, each giving it a rating from 1 (low) to 6 (high). The sum of those ratings is your Writing subscore, which is reported on a scale of 2 to 12 and presented with one of the reader's comments on your essay. The Combined English/Writing score is created by using a formula that weights the English Test score two-thirds and the Writing Test score one-third. It is reported on a 1-36 scale.

There are three test centres in Singapore:

  • Singapore American School (SAS)
  • US Education Information Centre (USEIC)
  • International Community School (ICS)

Most scores are available for online viewing within 2-3 weeks after each national or international test date. Scores for the ACT (No Writing) are normally reported within 3–8 weeks after the test date. If you take the ACT Plus Writing, scores will be reported only after all of your scores are available, including Writing, normally within 5–8 weeks after the test date.

You can take the ACT as many times as you want within a year. If you take the test more than once, you choose which test date results the colleges will receive. ACT sends scores only for the test date you select.

ACT results are accepted by all 4-year colleges and universities in the U.S. However, please take note that sometimes even if you taken the ACT, you still need to take SAT subject tests.

It is advisable for students to check with the individual colleges.

The ACT is an achievement test, measuring what a student has learned in school. The SAT is more of an aptitude test, testing reasoning and verbal abilities.

The ACT has up to 5 components: English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and an optional Writing Test. The SAT has only 3 components: Critical Reasoning, Mathematics, and a required Writing Test.

The College Board introduced a new version of the SAT in 2005, with a mandatory writing test. ACT continues to offer its well-established test, plus an optional writing test. You take the ACT Writing Test only if required by the college(s) you are applying to.

The SAT has a correction for guessing. That is, they deduct points for incorrect answers. The ACT is scored based on the number of correct answers with no penalty for guessing.

The ACT (No Writing) consists of 215 multiple-choice questions in English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. The ACT Plus Writing additionally includes the  one essay prompt. The ACT test is a paper-and-pencil test.

The ACT test takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete, including a short break (or just over 4 hours if you are taking the ACT Plus Writing).

The ACT allots:

  • 45 minutes for a 75-question English section
  • 60 minutes for a 60-question Mathematics section
  • 35 minutes for a 40-question Reading section
  • 35 minutes for a 40-question Science section
  • 30 minutes for an optional Writing section

The ACT consists of four sections (English, Mathematics, Reading and Science) and an optional Writing section.

  • The English section is a 75-question, 45-minute test that covers standard written English skills (punctuation, sentence structure, grammar and usage) and rhetorical skills (strategy, organization, style).
  • The Mathematics section is a 60-question, 60-minute test designed to measure the mathematical skills students have typically acquired in courses taken up to the beginning of grade 12.
  • The Reading section is a 40-question, 35-minute test that measures your reading comprehension. You're asked to read several passages and answer questions that show your understanding of what is directly stated or implied.
  • The Science section is a 40-question, 35-minute test that measures the interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving skills required in the natural sciences.
  • The Writing section is a 30-minute essay test that measures your writing skills emphasized in high school English classes and in entry-level college composition courses. The test consists of one prompt that defines an issue and describes two points of view on that issue. You are asked to respond to a question about your position on the stated issue.

The validity period of your ACT score may be valid up to 10 years, depending on the schools. However, ACT scores from more than five years ago may no longer be appropriate because they may not reflect your current level of educational development.
