This is one of the most frequently asked questions we get at ICON+. Here are some questions we throw back at you!
1. Did something occur on the test day that prevented you from scoring as high as you normally would have?
Perhaps you came down with the flu, received some very disturbing news just before the test, or got so nervous that your test-taking abilities were severely impaired. In such cases, it may be a good idea to retake the GMAT.
2. How much time and resources do you have to prepare for another try?
If you answered negatively to the question above, then chances are you will only get a significantly higher score if you commit to some serious GMAT prep time. Sign up for a course, borrow or buy a guide, but balance your GMAT study sessions with time to compose stellar essays and put together a complete application package.
3. What is the average GMAT score for your target program?
If you already scored close to or higher than the average GMAT score for your dream school, it may not be to such a great advantage to retake the GMAT. Unless you are hoping to use a high GMAT score to cover up for “gaps” in the rest of your application, that is!
4. How many times have you already taken the GMAT?
If you have already taken the GMAT 3 times, you should think twice before taking it again. Remember that all your GMAT scores will be reported to the institutions you apply to. Although most schools look at your highest score when considering you for admission, can you imagine how a score report with 10 test dates will look like to an admissions officer?
