Test-related questions

You have to register personally at the test centre, along with the test fee, 2 passport-sized photographs and a photocopy of your passport or NRIC.

The IELTS test fee is S$300.

Scores will be available online within 13 days after the test date.

There is no pass or fail mark. Scores are given on an Overall Band Score of one to nine.

In general, universities request an Overall Band Score of 6.0 or 6.5 for entrance to academic courses. You are advised to check the score required with the particular institution to which you are applying.

You must complete four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking in order to obtain an IELTS test report form.

You have a choice between Academic and General Training in the Reading and Writing modules. The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

The Academic test assesses whether a candidate is ready to study in English at an undergraduate or postgraduate level.

The General Training is for people who want to undertake non-academic training or apply for immigration to Australia, Canada or New Zealand.

There is a test date almost every week.

The main difference is that TOEFL uses American English and IELTS uses British English. Universities in America require TOEFL while the other international universities require IELTS. It is always advisable to check with the university that you are considering.

In the TOEFL speaking section, you will speak to a computer whereas in an IELTS speaking test, you will speak to a person.
