FAQ

SAT Reasoning Test
Test-related questions

In Singapore, there are 6 tests per year: Jan, May, June, Oct, Nov and Dec.
To find out exactly which dates, students will need to go www.collegeboard.org

The test fee is USD78 (as of august 2011). Students will need to online registration (payment can be made via credit card) at www.collegeboard.org

You can take the SAT as many times as you want within a year.  In the absence of Score Choice, your most recent score will appear on the official results, as well as the ones for your past six tests.

You can register up to an almost a year before the test.  Test registration usually closes a month before the test-taking date.

There are about six test centres in Singapore.

* Anglo Chinese Junior College
* Anderson Junior College
* St Francis Methodist School
* Hwa Chong Institution College
* Singapore Reg Language Centre
* Starhub Centre

There are 3 sections. Math, Critical Reading and Writing, each on the scale of 200-800. The entire score is out of 2400.

Scores will available for viewing (online) and sending around twenty days after the test date.

Paper and pencil test. Written essay, multiple-choice questions and student-produced responses (grid-ins)

If you plan to apply to American universities and colleges, it is most likely required.  Check the school’s websites for more information. In Singapore, Singapore Management University requires SAT from its international applicants.

The validity period of your SAT score is five years.

You can use the Score Choice option with Collegeboard (the SAT test administrators) to send a score of your choice on one test date for the SAT I. You cannot mix sectional scores on different test dates. For example, if you scored higher on the verbal on one test date and higher on the math on another test date, you cannot mix those scores. You can only choose scores from a single test date.

There are a few universities that ask students not to use Score Choice. Usually, they say that they only consider the highest score, but in reality, of course they’re going to see all of them.

There is normally no minimum score requirement set by universities in the USA. This is because US universities, on the whole, endeavor to evaluate applications holistically, taking into account the resume, essays, recommendation letters, interview, socioeconomic background, etc.

However, many universities make publically available average SAT I scores of their entering classes. Of course, the average depends on what you mean by “top schools”, we recommend that students aim for an SAT I score above 2200 if they are looking to gain entrance into an Ivy League school.

Prepare so that you complete your first SAT attempt in Year 11 (JC 1). This way, it is not too late if you need to attempt the exam again (it is common to take the SAT 2 or 3 times).

However, taking the SAT when you are too young is not advisable. By studying in school and getting older, your mind develops, and your SAT score rises. This is why you don’t want to take the SAT in Secondary 2, even though your score is valid for 5 years. By simply waiting and focusing on your school studies, your score will rise.

Give yourself a couple months to study, but don’t wait for too long as you might forget all of the things you learned from school which might help you on the exam.

If you use Score Choice, this has no impact. If you apply to a school that asks you not to use Score Choice, it will alert admissions officers if you have taken the test too many times. In general, taking the SAT Reasoning Test 2 or 3 times is not an issue.

Check with the institutions you are applying to - in many cases, the TOEFL or IELTS can be waived if the applicant has taken a higher level English course, studied in an environment where English is the medium of instruction for at least 10 years, or reached a certain score on the SAT critical reading section.  If you are an American citizen, this is not required.

The UKCAT is designed to be a test of aptitude rather than educational achievement.

For candidates sitting the examination in summer 2011, the UKCAT will consist:

  • Verbal reasoning - assesses candidates' ability to think logically about written information and to arrive at a reasoned conclusion.
  • Quantitative reasoning - assesses candidates' ability to solve numerical problems.
  • Abstract reasoning - assesses candidates' ability to infer relationships from information by convergent and divergent thinking.
  • Decision analysis - assesses candidates' ability to deal with various forms of information, to infer relationships, to make informed judgements, and to decide on an appropriate response, in situations of complexity and ambiguity.

In 2011, unlike in previous testing years, the UKCAT will not include a test of behavioural traits (previously sub-test 5). The 2011 test contains only 4 sub-tests.

There is no curriculum content as the test examines innate skills. Examples of questions you may be asked can be found in the preparation section. It is not necessary or possible to practise for these questions but you are advised to familiarise yourself with the format.

The standard test is delivered in just over 1 1/2 hours. Each subtest is in a multiple-choice format and is separately timed.

There is no single date for sitting the UKCAT, but candidates intending to apply in 2011 for entry to the participating universities in 2012 or for deferred entry in 2013 are required to take the UKCAT before the 7 October 2010 deadline.

The UKCAT results are only valid for applications to universities in the year in which the test is taken. If your application to medical school is not successful and you re-apply the following year, you will be required to re-sit the UKCAT.

There is no pass mark for the UKCAT. As mentioned above, performance in the UKCAT will be considered in conjunction with a number of other factors, so that no one element will determine whether or not an offer of a place can be made.

Sit the test between 1 September and 7 October 2011 (test fee £80 EU / £100 Non EU)

Test Fee varies. It is cheaper in during summer period.

The registration fee is payable online at the time of booking by major credit card (Visa, Mastercard or UK Visa debit card). The fee is always charged in GBP (pounds sterling). If you have a non-UK credit card, your credit card company will bill you according to its own rules for foreign transactions.

Candidates may cancel or reschedule their test, without charge, up to one clear day before their scheduled test date. A clear day does not include the day of the reschedule or the day of the test; for example for a test on a Friday, the last day to make any changes would be midnight on the preceding Wednesday. Where a candidate cancels their test within these deadlines they will receive a credit/debit card refund.

If the candidate cancels or reschedules later than this, the appointment will count as a 'no-show'. In this case a candidate wishing to reschedule their test would be required to pay a further fee for the rescheduled test. A candidate cancelling their test and not meeting the deadline would not receive a refund.

If you miss your test for any reason and have not rescheduled in time, you will have to book another test at your own expense. This applies in cases of illness, family emergency, accident, arrest, transport problems and security alert as well as forgetfulness and lateness. It also applies to those who arrive at the test centre with inadequate or invalid identification.

SAT Subject Test
Test-related questions

USD78/subject test (online registration) OR SGD122/subject test (paper registration with Connectere)

Students can visit www.collegeboard.org website to register and check on the next available subject test dates.

SAT Subject Tests (formerly known as the Achievement or SAT II's) are 60 minute multiple choice exams designed to measure knowledge and skills in particular subject areas.

Selective colleges often want more test information than the SAT alone provides, so they require students to take Subject Tests. With so many students having essentially the same grades and SAT Reasoning scores, they're looking for additional information to help them figure out whom to admit.

No. Students can only take either one during the test day.

Yes. Each Subject Test is one hour in length and you can take one, two, or three Subject Tests on the same day (Maximum is 3 tests in a day). Should student wish to take more than 3, they have to take the remaining test on the next available test date.

Some colleges specify the Subject Tests they require for admission, but most allow students to choose which tests to take. If you're unsure about the SAT Subject Tests and which schools require them, see below. Alternatively, it will be best to check directly with the school.

ACT results are accepted by all 4-year colleges and universities in the U.S.  However, please take note that sometimes even if you taken the ACT, you still need to take SAT subject tests. ACT

It is advisable for students to check with the individual colleges.

The ACT is an achievement test, measuring what a student has learned in school. The SAT is more of an aptitude test, testing reasoning and verbal abilities.

The ACT has up to 5 components: English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and an optional Writing Test. The SAT has only 3 components: Critical Reasoning, Mathematics, and a required Writing Test.

The College Board introduced a new version of the SAT in 2005, with a mandatory writing test. ACT continues to offer its well-established test, plus an optional writing test. You take the ACT Writing Test only if required by the college(s) you're applying to.

The SAT has a correction for guessing. That is, they take off for wrong answers. The ACT is scored based on the number of correct answers with no penalty for guessing.

Approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete, including a short break (or just over four hours if you are taking the ACT Plus Writing).

The listening, reading and writing test must be completed on the same day. There are no breaks between the three written tests. The speaking test may take up to seven days before or after the other three tests.

Academic – for institutions of higher education. The Academic format is, broadly speaking, for those who want to study in English-speaking universities or other institutions of higher education. Admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses is based on the result of the Academic test.

General Training – For school, work or migration. The General Training format focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts. It is typically for those who are going to English-speaking countries to do secondary education, work experience or training programs. People migrating to Australia, Canada and New Zealand must sit the General Training Test.

There are two types: Academic and General Training.

There are no restrictions on re-taking IELTS. If you do not get the result you wanted, you can register for another test as soon as you feel you are ready to do so.

The test score is valid for 2 years.

Test-related questions

Registration can be done online at www.mba.com. Before you are able to register for the GMAT Test, you have to sign up as a registered user on mba.com. It will usually take about 48 hours for the registration as a new user to be approved. Registration for the test date is on first-come-first-served basis. Tests are available daily. There are 6 available seats for each seating.

You may take the GMAT exam once every 31 calendar days and no more than five (5) times in a rolling 12-month period. If you score an 800 (full score) on the exam, you will be prohibited from testing for five (5) years from your exam date.

GMAT is Graduate Management Admissions Test. It is a computer-adaptive standardized test in mathematics and the English language for measuring aptitude to succeed academically in graduate business studies.

Business schools use the test as a criterion for admission into graduate business administration programs (e.g. MBA, Master of Accountancy, etc.) principally in the United States, but also in other English-speaking countries (Singapore included).

It will be best for students to check with the relevant universities whether or not a GMAT test score is required as part of the admission procedure.

The GMAT or Graduate Management Admission Test, as its name suggests, is for admission to management or business school while the GRE or Graduate Record Exam is for graduate school. In other means, GRE is for general graduate school other than business school.

In general, nearly all MBA program requires GMAT score. The PhD program in business school also accepts GRE score for admission though all of them also accept GMAT scores.

If you are applying to top 50 business schools, you need to have a score of at least 600 or above. For top 10 MBA programs, an average score of 700 is required.

The maximum score that can be achieved on the exam is 800. The Analytical Writing part of the test is graded on a scale of 0 (the minimum) to 6 (the maximum).

0 An essay that is totally illegible or obviously not written on the assigned topic.

1 An essay that is fundamentally deficient.

2 An essay that is seriously flawed.

3 An essay that is seriously limited.

4 An essay that is merely adequate.

5 An essay that is strong.

6 An essay that is outstanding.

The GMAT score is valid for 5 years.

GMAT Test is a Computer Adaptive Test. Questions in the Quantitative and Verbal sections are dynamically selected as you take the test; the multiple-choice questions will adjust to your ability level, and your test will be unique.

For each multiple-choice section of the GMAT exam, there is a large pool of potential questions ranging from a low to high level of difficulty. Each section of the test starts with a question of moderate difficulty. If you answer the first question correctly, the computer will usually give you a harder question. If you answer the first question incorrectly, your next question will be easier. This process will continue until you complete the section, at which point the computer will have an accurate assessment of your ability level in that subject area.

In a computer-adaptive test, only one question at a time is presented. Because the computer scores each question before selecting the next one, you may not skip, return to, or change your responses to previous questions.

There are 3 sections.

The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) is the first section of the test. This is followed by the Quantitative section, and the test concludes with the Verbal Ability section.

 Analytical Writing Assessment

The GMAT exam begins with the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). The AWA consists of two separate writing tasks—Analysis of an Issue and Analysis of an Argument. You are allowed 30 minutes to complete each one.

Quantitative Section
Following an optional break, you then begin with the Quantitative Section of the GMAT exam. This section contains 37 multiple-choice questions of two question types—Data Sufficiency and Problem Solving. You are allowed a maximum of 75 minutes to complete the entire section.

Verbal Section
After completion of the Quantitative Section (following an optional break), you begin the Verbal Section of the GMAT exam. This section contains 41 multiple choice questions of three question types—Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, and Sentence Correction. You are allowed a maximum of 75 minutes to complete the entire section.

You have three and a half hours in which to take the GMAT exam, but plan for a total time of approximately four hours.

The test fee is US$250 worldwide.

There is a US$50 fee to reschedule the date, time, or location of a GMAT exam appointment if you reschedule your appointment at least seven full calendar days before the date and time of your original appointment. If you reschedule within seven calendar days of the date and time of your original appointment, you will be charged the full registration amount. The rescheduling fee is subject to change without notice.

Pacing is critical, as there is a severe penalty for not completing. Both the time and number of questions that remain in the section are displayed on the screen during the exam. There are 37 Quantitative questions and 41 Verbal questions. If a question is too time-consuming or if you don’t know the answer, make an educated guess by first eliminating the answers you know to be wrong.

On the day you take the GMAT®, before you begin the exam, you may select up to five (5) GMAT Programs to receive your Official Score Report.

These recipients will receive the Official Score Report within 20 calendar days of your test. This service is covered by your registration fee. Once you have made your selections, you will not be able to change or delete them. The cost to send an Additional Score Report is US$28.

The only opportunity that you will have to cancel your scores is at the test center. Immediately after you complete the test—but before you view your scores—you will have the option to cancel your scores. You cannot cancel your scores after they are displayed or reported to you.

Test Day questions

Signing up for the GMAT is the easiest part of your process. Here is a web URL: www.mba.com/mba/TaketheGMAT.

Popular testing days fill up in advance, so if your schedule requires you to take the test on a certain day, be on top of it and sign up early. You need to pay the fee with a major credit card.

You can cancel your score, but you must do so before you see it. Once you see it, it must be reported; you do not have the option of withholding it. We do not recommend canceling a score unless you were tested under adverse circumstances, like illness. If you do poorly and still report your score, it is not the end of the world. An improvement between two test scores may be highly regarded by your school of choice. If you cancel, the cancellation is still reported to the schools.

There is technically no limit but we do not recommend taking the test more than three times. Taking the test many times may look bad. Plan on taking the test twice and reporting both scores (unless of course you do very well the first time). The admissions committee will take the best score of all your tests but will take a look at the history of the tests as well.

You can take the GMAT five times every year (12-month period). Within that year, you must wait 31 days between tests, regardless of score cancellations.

It is less common than you might think. Studies show that approximately 21% of the exams are taken by those who are retesting. Of those re-testers, it is uncommon that they take the test more than 3 times in a given year. Regarding results, the average increase between tests is 30 points on the total score. It is not unheard of that scores can go down with repeat testing. Your increase will depend on how much preparation you do in between. If you prepare well enough, odds are you won’t be compelled to retest!

If you don’t feel well, you should not take the test. You should be healthy and prepared when you take the GMAT. It will be an ordeal to sit through a 4-hour test while you are not at your best. You may end up canceling the score anyway. So do not get hung up on the rescheduling fee (US$50 if you reschedule before 7 calendar days of the test date or you will lose the entire US$250 test fee). Your bad score might become an anchoring point later on hindering your progress and hurting your self-confidence. Meantime, a bad score gets reported to schools as all your scores in the last five years will be shown.

However, if you are sure that you can achieve a high score based on your prior practice tests, you should take the test even when you don’t feel well. That way you don’t waste the test fee and have a chance to experience the real test while having the option to cancel it at the end.

Yes. Make sure you find out in advance where the test center is, and get there at least 30 minutes early because there is a check-in procedure. If you are more than 15 minutes late, the test administrators may not let you take your test and your US$250 test fee could be forfeited.

You do not need to bring much to the test center. In fact, you will not be allowed to bring any of your personal belongings such as cell phones, backpacks, purses, or handbags into the testing room. If you do bring your belongings with you, you will be required to put them in a storage area such as a small locker. So just bring the essential items (including clothes) you need before, during and after the test in a bag with flexible surface. The test administrator will provide you with everything you need to take the test, including a pencil and scratch paper/erasable booklets.

The test centers are typically very small. Depending on their locations and relationships with Pearson Vue, they might be owned by Pearson VUE or just an affiliated one in the network. If they are the latter, they may administer other tests for non-Pearson VUE entities. Therefore the condition of the test center and your test center experience may vary.

There is a waiting area. Depending on the number of staff members on duty at the test center and the number of test takers waiting, your wait time may vary. Feel free to relax. If you want to continue to read notes or books while waiting, lock your belongings away in the locker first except for a book or some notes. When you get called, you can quickly go to your locker and lock the last item before proceeding. But please be quick, otherwise the staff may become impatient.

Your family or friends will not be permitted to wait for you at the test center while you are taking your test. They will also not be able to contact you while you are being tested.

You will take your GMAT at an individual computer workstation next to many other computer workstations in a testing room. Your computer workstation is similar to a basic small office cubicle. Please note that there will be audio/visual monitoring during the test.

There is no dress code. You should dress comfortably and possibly bring extra layers in case the room gets cold.

You will need to show the test administrator valid ID. Please prepare two to three valid IDs such as a passport, driver’s license, or a major credit card with your photo. That way in case one expires or somehow cannot be found at the test center, you are still good to go.

The administrator will also take your photograph, signature, and take your fingerprint digitally. You will be asked to agree to the GMAT Examination Testing Rules & Agreement. When you sign for the paperwork, please slow down and make your signature very legible and correspond to the full name on your ID. Otherwise you may be asked to re-sign your name multiple times which might affect your mood for the test later on. If you refuse to comply with any of these procedures, you may be asked to leave and forfeit your fee.

The test takes around 4 hours. You are given two 5-minute breaks at scheduled intervals. It is important to not take more than 5 minutes during these breaks because you will be docked the amount of time you go over.

Not besides the scheduled breaks. If there is an emergency, raise your hand and the test administrator should let you leave; however the timer on your test will not stop. Be careful about leaving, because if you are gone too long or leave too many times, your test administrator may report you to Pearson VUE or GMAC. Note that you will need to provide your fingerprint at re-entry.

Yes, but not into the testing room. You can only eat, drink, or use tobacco during the scheduled breaks. If you need to smoke or go outside for any reason, be sure to alert the test administrator. Note that rules about leaving vary from center to center, so you should clearly understand those rules before making any decisions in order to avoid any problems. We recommend you bring some chocolates, power bars and water for two short five-minute breaks in order to maintain your momentum through the test.

You cannot use your cell phone or PDA during the test or on your break. We recommend you turn off any electronic devices stored in the locker. Please do not check your voicemail or emails during your break. You will be violating the test center rules and may be asked to leave immediately.

Usually, the start of the test will be delayed or will be rescheduled. If such action is not possible, you can choose either a full refund or to sign up for a different test date free of charge.

You will have to begin your test as soon as possible, but first you will have to agree to the GMAT Nondisclosure Agreement and General Terms of Use statement including that you will not use any non-permitted devices. You must agree to this statement, or risk not being allowed to complete the test and forfeiting your test fee.

You should raise your hand and tell the test administrator. You should not try and fix it yourself.

Based on the policies listed on the websites of GMAC®, Pearson VUE and ACT, if anything happens during the test that serves as an interruption or causes a mistiming, or if anything is out of the ordinary or deviates from normal testing procedure, GMAC and/or Pearson VUE will conduct an examination of the situation. One of those organizations will then decide if they should pursue disciplinary action including score cancellation. If any organization decides to take any action against an examinee or on behalf of one, the affected parties will have the option of A) take their test again at no additional charge, or receive a refund UNLESS that person is found to be the cause or source of the disruption. If you should opt to take the test again, you must take it in its entirety.

No, you cannot use a calculator or any other type of aid including laptops, PDA’s, translators, dictionaries etc.

Yes. There are many reasons for dismissal. These include providing false information or not providing it at all, bringing a test aid, not complying with an administrator’s reasonable requests, helping another test taker or letting them help you, tampering with the operation of the computer, and not following any rules or procedures.

You must write two essays for the Analytical Writing Section of the GMAT. If there is evidence of plagiarism, your scores can and will be cancelled. Please note that your essays become the property of GMAC.

After the test you will answer some questions about yourself and your plans for graduate school, and whether you would like to take part in various surveys or receive further information. Your answer choices to these questions may reflect information that you previously provided, earlier in the registration process.

GRE
Test-related questions

Registration can be done online at www.gre.org.

The test fee is US$170.

GRE test scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records and other qualifications for graduate study. The scores provide common measures for comparing the qualifications of applicants and aid in evaluating grades and recommendations.

The GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills that are not related to any specific field of study.

LSAT
Test-related questions

Online registration at www.lsat.org

There are normally 4 test dates in Singapore. June, October, December and February.

The test fee is US$132.

The test centre in Singapore is at US Education Information Centre (USEIC) in Bestway Building.

The test consists of five 35-minute sections of multiple-choice questions. Four of the five sections contribute to the test taker's score. The unscored section, commonly referred to as the variable section, typically is used to pretest new test questions or to preequate new test forms. The placement of this section will vary. A 35-minute writing sample is administered at the end of the test. LSAC does not score the writing sample, but copies of the writing sample are sent to all law schools to which you apply.

Online. 3 weeks after the test day.

The test is an integral part of the law school admission process in the United States, Canada, and a growing number of other countries. It provides a standard measure of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills that law schools can use as one of several factors in assessing applicants.

You may not take the LSAT more than three times in any two-year period. This policy applies even if you cancel your score or if your score is not otherwise reported

The LSAT is designed to measure skills that are considered essential for success in law school: the reading and comprehension of complex texts with accuracy and insight; the organization and management of information and the ability to draw reasonable inferences from it; the ability to think critically; and the analysis and evaluation of the reasoning and arguments of others.

The three multiple-choice question types in the LSAT are:

  • Reading Comprehension Questions
These questions measure the ability to read, with understanding and insight, examples of lengthy and complex materials similar to those commonly encountered in law school. The Reading Comprehension section contains four sets of reading questions, each consisting of a selection of reading material, followed by five to eight questions that test reading and reasoning abilities.

  • Analytical Reasoning Questions
These questions measure the ability to understand a structure of relationships and to draw logical conclusions about that structure. You are asked to reason deductively from a set of statements and rules or principles that describe relationships among persons, things, or events. Analytical Reasoning questions reflect the kinds of complex analyses that a law student performs in the course of legal problem solving.

  • Logical Reasoning Questions
These questions assess the ability to analyze, critically evaluate, and complete arguments as they occur in ordinary language. Each Logical Reasoning question requires the test taker to read and comprehend a short passage, then answer a question about it. The questions are designed to assess a wide range of skills involved in thinking critically, with an emphasis on skills that are central ·         to legal reasoning. These skills include drawing well-supported conclusions, reasoning by analogy, determining how additional evidence affects an argument, applying principles or rules, and identifying argument flaws.

LNAT
Test-related questions

Section A consists of 42 multiple choice questions. The questions are based on 12 argumentative passages, with 3 or 4 multiple choice questions on each. Candidates are given 95 minutes to answer all of the questions.

Candidates can review their answers at any time during the 95 minutes, but cannot return to the multiple choice section once they begin Section B.

Section B, candidates have 40 minutes to answer one of three essay questions on a range of subjects and demonstrate their ability to argue economically to a conclusion with a good command of written English.

The LNAT is a 2¼ hour test in two sections.

The test fee is payable online, at the time of booking a test, by major credit card (Visa, MC, Amex, JCB) or debit card (Visa only).

The fee is always charged in GBP (pounds sterling). If you have a non-UK credit card, your credit card company will bill you according to its own rules for foreign transactions.

If you are applying to study undergraduate law at the LNAT-participating universities you should aim to take the test as early in the academic year as possible for maximum choice of test venue and availability, and to meet admissions deadlines.

The LNAT must be taken in the UCAS year in which you are applying to university.

Pearson VUE, who run the LNAT, marks candidates’ multiple choice answers by computer and a mark out of 42 is created. This is known as an LNAT score.

Candidates’ essays are not marked but stored by the computer for university admissions tutors to read.

Following completion of the test, Pearson VUE will supply the candidate’s LNAT score and essay directly to those LNAT-participating universities to which the candidate has applied.  The universities get the results in good time for their applications process and before the results are sent to the candidates.

Each university’s admissions tutors will then refer to the candidates’ score as part of their application. The candidate’s LNAT score and the essays will be used by each university in the way that best suits its own admissions system.

The use of LNAT essays varies and is dependent on each participating university’s admissions policy. Some universities may use it, for example, as the basis for interview questions. Others may compare it with the personal statement and school/college report on UCAS forms, or use it as a means of distinguishing between borderline candidates.

LNAT results are emailed to candidates twice a year, with test dates determining the results date.

Candidates taking the LNAT before 15 January 2012 will receive their results in early February 2012. Candidates taking the test after 15 January 2012 will receive their results in early July 2012.

Candidates may only sit the LNAT once between 1 September 2011 and 30 June 2012. If a candidate sits the test twice, their later test sitting will be invalid.

LNAT was developed by a consortium of UK universities as a fair way to assess  a candidate’s potential to study law at undergraduate level, regardless of their education or personal background.

You need to take the LNAT if you are applying for 2012 entry (or deferred entry in 2013) to any of the following UK undergraduate law programmes (listed by university and UCAS code). As well as taking the LNAT, you need to apply for your chosen programmes in the normal way. Sitting the LNAT does not constitute an application to any universities.

The LNAT must be taken by all applicants (UK, EU and overseas) to undergraduate law programmes at

·

University of Birmingham

·

University of Bristol

·

Durham University

·

University of Glasgow

·

King's College London

·

University of Manchester

·

University of Nottingham

·

NUI Maynooth (course codes MH115, MH406 and MH119) (mature entry only)

·

IE University (choice of tests applies)

Candidates should not take the LNAT if applying to study law at non-LNAT-participating universities as they cannot access LNAT scores.

The four sections of the MCAT test result in a separate score each. The Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning and Biological Sciences Sections, each comprised of multiple-choice questions, are scored between a low 1 and a high of 15. The Writing Sample section consists of two essays. Each essay is scored twice on a scale of 1-6 and ultimately converted to an alphabetical scale.

Scores will be released approximately 30 days after each test date.

If you feel that your scores are low and do not accurately reflect your abilities, you may take the test again.

Schools use multiple sets of scores in several ways.

  • Some schools weigh all sets of score equally and weigh improvements.
  • Some consider only the most recent set of scores.
  • Some schools take the average of all sets of scores.
  • Some schools use the highest set of scores or the highest individual section scores.

No. Calculators may not be used in the BMAT.

Each question, in Sections 1 and 2, is worth one mark. Total raw marks for each section are converted to the BMAT scale, which runs from 1 (low) - 9 (high). Scores are reported to one decimal place.

Typical BMAT candidates will score around 5.0, which equates to approximately half marks. The best candidates will score around 6.0, and a few exceptional candidates will score higher than 7.0.

Section 3 essays are double marked. Each examiner gives a score for quality of content on the scale of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and a score for quality of written English on a scale of A, C, E.

If the two marks for quality of content are the same, or occupy adjacent positions on the scale, the average of the two marks is reported. If the two marks for quality of written English are the same, or occupy adjacent positions on the scale, the scores are combined in the following way: AA = A, AC = B, CC = C, CE = D and EE = E.

If there is a larger discrepancy in the marks, the essays are marked for a third time, and the final mark awarded is checked by the Senior Assessment Manager.

For example, an essay given a 4C by one examiner and 4A by the other will receive a final score of 4B; an essay given 3C by one examiner and 2C by the other will receive a mark of 2.5C.

We can then help guide you in preparing the best possible application package for each university. Here are our students' success stories.
